here is a comprehensive list of tips for care and maintenance.

Human Hair Wig Care & Tips

Taking proper care of your human hair wig will help maintain softness, shine, colour and overall longevity. Because the hair is no longer connected to a natural scalp, it does not receive natural oils and requires gentler handling and more controlled product use than natural hair.

How Often to Wash Your Wig

Your human hair wig should be washed approximately every 7–10 wears, or sooner if you notice product build-up, sweat or loss of movement and shine. Washing too frequently can dry the hair and reduce the lifespan of the wig, so it is best to wash only when necessary. If the wig is worn occasionally, you can extend the time between washes.

How to Wash a Human Hair Wig

Before washing, gently detangle the hair using a wide-tooth comb or wig brush, starting from the ends and working upwards. Always use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo suitable for human hair wigs. Wash the hair in lukewarm water and avoid rubbing, twisting or scrubbing the hair.

Apply conditioner only from the mid-lengths to the ends and avoid the lace and cap area, as conditioner near the knots can weaken them over time. Rinse thoroughly and gently press out excess water with a towel. Allow the wig to air dry on a wig stand away from direct sunlight or heat.

Heat Styling and Colour Protection

Heat tools may be used on human hair wigs, however heat should always be kept at a low to medium setting. A heat protectant spray must be applied before using straighteners, curling irons or a blow-dryer. Repeated high heat can dry the hair, weaken the strands and cause colour to fade more quickly.

Using heat protection and lower temperatures will help maintain the softness and colour of your wig for longer.

Products and Ingredients to Avoid

To protect the quality of your human hair wig, avoid using products that contain heavy proteins or bond-building systems, including Olaplex and similar repair or strengthening treatments. These products are designed for chemically damaged hair growing from the scalp and can cause human hair wigs to become stiff, dry, brittle and prone to breakage over time.

Avoid shampoos and conditioners containing sulfates, as these can strip moisture and dull the hair. Alcohol-heavy styling products should also be avoided, as they can dry out the hair and reduce softness. Heavy oils, waxes and greasy serums can weigh the hair down and cause build-up that is difficult to remove.

Only use lightweight, wig-friendly styling and finishing products.

Recommended Product Types

Choose gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and lightweight conditioners designed for human hair wigs or professional use on delicate hair. A light leave-in spray or detangler can be used sparingly on the mid-lengths and ends to maintain softness and manageability. Always avoid over-applying products.

Lace and Cap Care

The lace area should be cleaned gently using lukewarm water and a mild cleanser to remove makeup, residue and adhesive. Do not scrub or stretch the lace, as this can damage the delicate material and loosen the knots. Conditioner should never be applied directly to the lace or cap.

Always handle the hairline and parting areas with care to avoid unnecessary shedding or lifting of knots.

Everyday Handling and Wear

Before and after wearing your wig, gently detangle the hair starting from the ends and working upwards. Avoid pulling or brushing aggressively, especially near the lace front and hairline.

Sleeping in your wig is not recommended, as friction can cause tangling, breakage and faster wear. Environmental exposure such as sun, sweat and humidity can also reduce softness and colour longevity, so additional care may be needed during hot or active days.

Storage

When not in use, store your wig on a wig stand or mannequin head to help maintain its shape and allow airflow. Keep the wig in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Professional Maintenance

For trimming, reshaping or colour services, always use a stylist who is experienced with human hair wigs. Professional handling helps protect the lace, cap construction and overall quality of the hair.
